Beijing Aquarium is located on the north bank of the Changhe River within the Beijing Zoo. Beijing Aquarium is a magnificent architecture shaped like a huge blue conch parking itself on the beach embraced by green trees and clusters of beautiful flowers. It covers 120,000 square meters with a construction area of 42,000 square meters and integrates marine animals’ shows, scientific education and entertainment into a whole body. Ever since it was opened in March 1999, it has attracted about 1.5 million tourists per year.

The seven exhibition halls in the building were designed delicately to encompass seven topics with the idea of Know oceans, know halobios and they are "Rainforest Adventure" , "Colorful Beach" , "Wonders of coral reefs" , "Shark Wharf", "Rare Chinese sturgeon hall" , "Whale and dophine discovery " , and "Marine Mammal Pavilion" . All the seven exhibition halls provide a wonderful fantasy marine world by various means to the visitors.

Beijing Aquarium has the world's advanced life support system and it has water totaling as much as 18,000 tons which all build the favorable environment for the aquatic animals. According to the "Rarity, Singularity, Specialties" exhibition policy, there are thousands of marine species and freshwater species. Among them, there are dozens of world-class and state-level protection varieties such as arapaima, red dragon, Chinese sturgeon, fat rouge fish, green turtles, giant salamander and so on, and there are some dolphins and other large marine mammals.

Beijing Aquarium is the national marine popular science education base & Beijing Municipal marine popular science education base. Popular science education is popular around schools and society. Beijing Aquarium placing emphasis on research work, and work together with Institute of Hydrobiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yangtze River Fishery Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, China Geology University to hold various forms of cooperation activities. Since 2005, with the support and help of Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, Beijing Aquarium and the Yangtze River Research Institute have launched protection project for Chinese Sturgeon which is one of the endangered species in China. Now this project has gained some important achievements: achieving the feed of wild Chinese sturgeon in the artificial environment and good recovery of the mother sturgeon and baby sturgeon; successfully establish the younger generation of Chinese Sturgeon in aquarium; Achieved the safe line-haul of large wild Chinese sturgeon; by the display and advertisement of Chinese sturgeon, the public protection awareness is improved to a new higher height.

Beijing Aquarium pays much attention to social commonweal activities. It had organized the《blue space sculpture exhibition》for six times and the theme of this exhibition were all about the environmental conservation & zoology protection. In addition, Beijing Aquarium often takes part in various activities for helping the poor areas and the schools in these poverty-stricken areas.

Beijing Aquarium keeps close and comprehensive contact with other aquariums around the world and cooperates with them.
